Obesity isn’t just an issue of bodyweight. Biblically, God used the less-PC term “fat” to describe a condition of excess unto spoiling. He described Israel this way:
“Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.” –Deuteronomy 32:15
A life of ease had Israel so privileged they became entitled, addicted to excess, spoiled. Unhappy with any sort of restraint or discipline, they claimed independence from God. They made light of the One they were dependent on.
Israel’s freedom to “grow fat” depended on armies like those Joshua and David famously led. Their independence came on the backs of generations prior who made sacrifices and chose obedience- even in very hard circumstances. Most of all, God was the securer of their security.
But they forgot God.
Sometimes I see us behaving the same way, celebrating Independence Day without regard for the one(s) we depend on for our freedom.
Our independence depends on…
Soldiers who fight to protect our rights.
Law enforcement who maintain our safety at home.
Leaders who make tough decisions daily.
Families who make sacrifices.
God, who is over all.
[bctt tweet=”On this day of independence, let’s remember Who we are dependent on. Our dependence is a gift. It’s how we have our freedom and keep our freedom. Let’s not make light of our Savior, or the price so many pay for our freedom. ” username= “BethanyMcIlrath” “PatHolbrook”]
“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” –Galatians 5:13
How are you serving others with your freedom today?
Happy (In)Dependence Day!

“Sometimes I see us behaving the same way, celebrating Independence Day without regard for the one(s) we depend on for our freedom.” So true, Bethany. We follow in the footsteps of the Israelites so many times and forget we need God, we are dependent on Him for everything. So thankful for our freedom because of those who helped fight for it in our country and Christ who won it on the cross and an empty tomb.
Thank you Karen! I am so thankful too! Happy Independence Day!
