Sovereign. Omniscient. Omnipresent.
Words like these accurately describe God’s qualities, but sometimes we find them so obscure and over our heads that the awe gets lost. We pray vaguely aware that God can do whatever He wills- but the wonder and reverence get lost in the routine of it all.
When awe of God is stifled, we tend toward self-sufficiency instead of faithful surrender. CT
Today, join me in this little exercise in awe.
(I suspect our wonder at God and trust in Him over ourselves may increase just a bit!)
God is sovereign.
That means God has all the power to do whatever He decides to do.
Try this:
- Command the rain to stop or the sun to shine
- Announce “let there be light” in the dark
- Tell a headache to just go away
- Call down pizza from heaven
- Change someone’s stubborn heart
God is omniscient.
That means God knows everything- for better or for worse.
Try this:
- Plan what’s going to happen for the next 3 hours minute by minute
- Ask zero questions while doing everything you need to do
- Make decisions based on what you know for certain is going to happen
- Respond to other’s questions with complete confidence that you know what you’re doing
That means God is everywhere, all the time, without limit.
Try this:
- Get your to-do list done today without moving from where you currently are
- Respond to someone else’s sharing as if you were actually there with them the whole time
- Say “I saw that!” to other people without looking
- Be in three places at once today

Well, Bethany, I, for one, need my awe muscles developed in a huge way, so thanks for this little work out. And for anyone who has NOT read Jen Wilkin’s books on the attributes of God (In His Image and None Like Him), I suggest them as an awe-muscle-maintenance program!
Yes, me too! And such an amazing book, perfect recommendation for inspiring awe!
Bethany, that brings it down to where we can appreciate His God-qualities that we can’t begin to touch. Loved it!
So glad Debbie! So appreciative of Him!
That was an amazing way to display his powers and certainly put awe in my heart. Thanks for sharing.
Thankful this simple exercise inspired awe in you too!
I love the sovereignty of God and what it means. I love that he is sovereign. I nearly named my late in life surprise sovereign but I was vetoed. I still think it was an appropriate name!
Love it too! And that’s a great name!! Haha sorry it didn’t work out!
Great exercise! It really puts you in your place and lets you see who the Lord really is. Sometimes I picture the Lord as a very tall (about 20 feet) father sitting in his comfortable chair. I crawl up on His lap, like an 8 year old kid, and lay my head on His breast. He put His arm around me and cuddles me up to Himself. I’ll just lay there in Him in total peace knowing that He has me and I am His.
What a great image, Larry! Thank you!
We have an awesome God! Great post!
You’re very welcome to drop by for a cup of inspiration,
Blessings,
Jennifer
Amen! Thanks, Jennifer!
I do wish I could get my to-do list done without moving from this spot. Ha! laurensparks.net
love this silly exercise and I can’t do much on my to do list by sitting and eating cake (well, that was on my list ) but this was a needed reminder of who God is and who I am not!
